Different stages of Diabetes development and Management
Stage-1/ Agni disturbances: Disturbances of the oral hygiene and getting foul smell refer to the poor digestion and the formation of Ama in the body. Along with foul smell he may even get the referral symptoms of heaviness of body, salivation, overweight, belching, bloating, problems of teeth, pain in abdomen, etc. If a person at this stage gets awareness of the condition and act accordingly with regulated food habits can prolong the effect of faulty metabolism. The regulated food habits don’t mean to stop, a small quantity in time food consumption is necessary. You may use – Bhaskara Lavanma churna, Hingwastaka Vhurna, etc. to regulate the digestion.
Stage-2 / Stress manifestation: Usually the stress is common ailment of association. But the precipitate stress or sudden impact of it (any death or miserable event in the family) will guide the body for further metabolic deteriorations. Thus the stress becomes the fuel for the strengthening of the Diabetes. At this stage the patient has to learn him/her self to console and continue with measures of balancing his mind. All that we can do for the stress relief is done along with food regulation. Manasa Mitra Vatakam (Plain or with Gold) is the best to regulate the stress. You may use even Himasagara Tailam – external oil for head to relieve stress.
Stage-3 / Pre-disease syndrome: at this stage of the disease, the Diabetes has taken a shape and express itself in the Urine as sweet urine or increased frequency and quantity. No need to be panic. Let the stage one and two regimens are followed along with suitable medication under supervision. At this stage the disease is fully reversible. At this stage Chandraprabha vati, Nishamalaki are the better medicines to manage Diabetes.
Stage-4 / Disease expression: By this stage the physician would have established the Diabetes with measured Blood sugar levels. If you are just awarded “Diabetes”, don’t worry – still you have a chance to concur the disease. Many more modalities to regulate the life style are available. The range varies from internal medication to Panchakarma treatment. Here the magic herb – Sadabahar / Vinca rosea (Periwinkle) plays a role.
Stage-5 / Complication stage: Diabetes even though a sweet disease wish to be with you life long unless you are determined to change your life style. As the Diabetes is progressive gives rise many complications, require a separate line of treatment. They include –
1) Neurological problems like – numbness, tremors, etc.
2) Sexual problems like – Male Erectile (sexual) Dysfunction, Female Sexual Dysfunction, etc.
3) Urological problems like – urinary infections, incontinence, etc.
4) Visual disturbances and cataract,
5) Musculoskeletal problems like – stiff joint, muscle pain,
Ayurveda classified a Sweet disease in the Urinary syndrome of Prameha along with 20 more conditions. The precursor of this Madhumeha were told as the Obesity i.e. Sthoulya. As stated by Charaka – “Urbanization is the root cause of all diseases”, the civilized stress has its role in causing the metabolic disturbances resultant into an out come of Sweet Urine – “Diabetes”.
Diabetes usually found in the Dental clinics or examined specifically with a Family history. The phases of Madumeha are wide and its treatment more or less is regulation of stress and food habits.
Sadapushpa / Sadabahar / Vinca rosea (Periwinkle) is an evergreen common shrub seen all around us blooming in every season. Usually the plant is of 1 meter tall with oval to oblong leaves. The species has long been cultivated for herbal medicine and as an ornamental plant also. Irrespective of temperatures it flowers and accustoms for any circumstances. It is very much seen in India where the sun and well-drained soil is plenty.
Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine use this plant as herb for many ailments. Extracts of Vinca rosea have been used to treat numerous diseases, including diabetes, cancer, malaria and Hodgkin’s disease, etc.
Sadapushpa Tailam for Diabetes:
A clinical trial was conducted in 1998 with Vinca rosea on diabetes as a part of M.D. Thesis under my supervision. The results were excellent. Each one ml of the oil prepared has a power of regulating the 125-250 mg of Blood Glucose. The combination and the preparation method are as under.
Step1 – Take 250 gms of Sadabahar plant – crush it to the paste
Step2 – Add 1000 ml of water to the 250gms paste of sadabahar and cook it on mild fire till the quantity is reduced to 500 ml
Step3 – Filter the content of the Sadabahar decoction and add 500 ml of Til oil along with 100 gms of Sadabahar paste and 50 gm of Pippali (Piper longum) powder.
Step4- cook the content on small fire till the water is evaporated.
Step5- Filters the oil after cooling. The “Sadapushpa Taila” for Diabetes is ready.
Usage: Each one ml of the Medicine is capable of controlling the 125-250 mg of Blood Glucose, so calculate, what amount of excess Glucose is in your blood there by the dosage is fixed.
Dosage fixing Example: If you have the Post lunch Blood Sugar as 375mg, it is excess of 220mg approx. in comparison with normal. So, have 1 ml twice daily 30-45 minutes before to the food. Add 1 ml of Medicine to half glass of milk and consume half an hour before to food.
A study was carried out to evaluate the antidiabetic activity of Vinca rosea methanolic whole plant extracts in alloxan induced diabetic rats for 14 days. The methanolic whole plant extract at high dose (500?mg/kg) exhibited significant anti-hyperglycemic activity than whole plant extract at low dose (300?mg/kg) in diabetic rats. The methanolic extracts also showed improvement in parameters like body weight and lipid profile as well as regeneration of beta-cells of pancreas in diabetic rats. Histopathological studies reinforce the healing of pancreas, by methanolic Vinca rosea extracts, as a possible mechanism of their antidiabetic activity .
Another study of aqueous extract of Piper nigrum seeds and Vinca rosea flowers were administered orally to alloxan induced diabetic rats once a day for 4 weeks. These treatments lead to significant lowering of blood sugar level and reduction in serum lipids. The levels of antioxidant enzymes, catalase and glutathione peroxidase decreased in alloxan induced diabetic rats however these levels returned to normal in insulin, P. nigrum and V. rosea treated rats. There was no significant difference in superoxide dismutase activity in all groups compared to controls. Lipid peroxidation levels were significantly higher in diabetic rats and it was slightly increased in insulin, P. nigrum and V. rosea treated rats as compared to control rat. These results suggest that oxidative stress plays a key role in diabetes, and treatment with P. nigrum and V. rosea are useful in controlling not only the glucose and lipid levels but these components may also be helpful in strengthening the antioxidants potential .

1) why to take it with milk and that also before meal will it not cause further abhishyand and aam dushti what would be the probable mode of action – dr. shweta mishra
A very good question doctor. The theme of the Ayurveda medications follow the two concepts. 1) Agni and the 2) Dhatu availability (Bio-availability). The composition is having Pippali, a bio-available and Agni deepaka. So, No Abhishyanda or Ama development. Further the bonding of the medicine is an important point. Usually we make the Glucose bonding of the Medicines either with Honey, etc. If is is not anticipated a common vehicle of water. Here the long action is required. So, the lacto-bonding is given. The Lacto-bonded molecules will act on the target specificity of Pancreas, Lipid metabolism and Glucose metabolism with out effecting the normal Glucose cycle. As the Lacto-bonded drug alkaloids are free to act on the rejuvenation of pancreatic beeta cells and regulation of the Blood Glucose levels – This Research becomes fruitful with minimal effort.
2) Is there any reaction or allergy with this medicine?
There are no adverse reactions noticed. As the people are allergic to much food material – there is a possibility of getting any allergic rash with the Til Oil. In such a case – use Ghee instead of Oil in the preparation.
